Year(s): 1959
ACC Set Designation:
Set Name: Venezuela Topps
Country: Venezuela
Description: Beginning in 1952, after the MLB season ended, Topps began shipping US Topps high-numbered cards down to Venezuela. This continued each year through 1958 and proved successful enough for Topps to license a parallel set to be produced and distributed in Venezuela. In most years, such as the debut set in 1959, the cards destined for the South American market represented a parallel of the first couple series of Topps' regular U.S. issue. Print quality (usually lack of gloss on front) is the major difference between the two issues. Backs of some of the 1959 Venezuelan cards carry the credit line: "Impreso en Venezuela por Benco C.A." The cards were issued in two series - the first series (1-110) and the second series (111-198). The set used two different trademarks on the cards, with half of the set getting a Spanish trademark, the other half getting the US Topps trademark. A reality of the Venezuelan cards is that they tend to survive in low-grade condition due to the local custom of gluing cards into albums and scrapbooks. After its 1959 issue, Topps produced Venezuelan cards only in the even-numbered years, except for 1967, until the last of the sets was issued in 1968.
