Rube Waddell
(b. October 13, 1876 - d. April 1, 1914)
Rube Waddell threw hard and lived even harder. In the AL's first six seasons, Rube was the circuit's best lefthander, under the watchful eye of Connie Mack, winning 20 games four straight years and leading the league in Ks six consecutive years. An eccentric, Waddell couldn't confine himself to baseball, as alligator wrestling, fire-fighting, acting, marbles, and the demon alcohol all competed for his attention. He had a career 191-145 record with 2,316 Ks.

Comments: I first purchased a tribute card of Waddell, a 1961 Fleer PSA 8, and sold the card in December, 2003 after upgrading to a PSA 9. Earlier in the year, I had also picked up a PSA 3 T206 on eBay. I purchased a SGC 70 in April, 2005 off the Net 54 B/S/T forum from seller and hobby friend Quan Nguyen (cardrack!). But, I decided to go with a different back and replaced the card with a PSA 5 Sovereign after winning an eBay auction in June, 2005. I found this beautiful SGC 80 upgrade with one of my weekly eBay searches in November, 2011 from Kristopher Lill (broadhurstinc). I was ecstatic because the color, registration and corners were significantly better.

ACC Set Designation: T206
Set Name: Sovereign Cigarettes

Description: The nearly 525 cards which make up the T206 set are the most popular of the early tobacco issues. Players are depicted in color lithographs surrounded by a white border. The player's last name on the -7/16" X 2-5/8" cards appears at the bottom with the city and league, when a city had more than one team. Backs contain an ad for one of 16 brands of cigarettes. There are 389 major leaguer cards and 134 minor leaguer cards in the set, but with front/back varieties the number of potentially different cards runs into the thousands. The set features many expensive cards including a number of pose and/or team variations.
