Roy Campanella
|
(b. November 19, 1921 - d. June 26, 1993)
|
Roy Campanella, on the of the great athletes of his time, had a
.312 average, 41 homers, 103 runs scored, and 142 RBI in 1953 -
amazing marks for a backstop. In 1951, 1953, and 1955 the Dodger
catcher was named the NL's MVP. He led his team to five pennants
in 10 years. A 1958 automobile accident left Campanella paralyzed,
and his struggle to remain active has served as a continuing inspiration. |

Comments: My first Campy was an ultra high-end
EIGHT, oh-so-close to being a mint card. The card exhibited terrific centering,
incredible gloss and very strong corners. I had the 1954 Bowman
Campy PSA 8 for a long time as it was purchased from Piedmont Cards back in 12/16/98. Here's the card:
UPDATE: With only 22 higher graded examples in the world, it was hard to pass up a PSA 8.5 beauty when it showed up on eBay in March, 2021. I had a chance to pick up several PSA 9s over the years but for some reason this one made me pull the trigger. The color and centering were fantastic and the card just popped. I’ve always really liked the pastel coloring on this one. |
