Oscar Charleston

(b. October 14, 1896 - d. October 5, 1954)
|
Blessed with speed and power in abundance, center fielder Oscar
Charleston is thought to many to be greatest of all Negro League
players. Superb defensively, on offense he could both steal a base
and hit a home run. In 1932, he became player-manager of the Pittsburgh
Crawfords, whose lineup, including Charleston, featured five Hall
of Famers. The team went 99-36 that year, and hit .363. |
