Jimmy Collins
(b. January 16, 1870 - d. March 6, 1943)
Jimmy Collins revolutionized the third base position by moving around, charging in, and fielding bunts bare-handed. Playing primarily for both the Boston Beaneaters in the National League and the Boston Pilgrims in the AL, Collins hit a robust .294, topping the .300 mark five times and the 100 RBI mark four times.

Comments: This position in the collection is somewhat of an anomaly. Normally I pick just one card for each player. There are a couple exceptions - Medwick and Collins. What do they have in common? Well - in both cases I'm accumulating different back variations of the same card. I've settled on three different backs for Jimmy Collins - Carolina Brights, Polar Bear, and Tolstoi. None of these were represented by any other player in the collection so I ended up keeping all three. For how I came to own these it's just best to summarize in a timeline:

  • 09/2002 - PSA 1 (back unknown) via eBay from Jeff Morrill (sportscardzz2)
  • 12/2003 - PSA 6 (back unknown) via eBay from Jami Cullen (jgoldilox)
  • 10/2005 - PSA 1 (Tolstoi) via Net54 B/S/T from Tom Botticelli
  • 06/2006 - SGC 40 (Tolstoi) via eBay from Sean D. Besser (hanksta3)
  • 10/2006 - PSA 5 (Carolina Brights) via eBay from Dean Hanley (deansvintagecards) - Thanks Dean!
  • 10/2006 - SGC 30 (Polar Bear) via eBay from Ryan Crisler (campuscove)
  • 12/2006 - PSA 4 (Polar Bear) via eBay from London Venture Capital (london_venture)
  • 07/2007 - PSA 4 (Tolstoi) via eBay from Tom Reaves (sunsurfandsand) - Thanks Tom!
  • 08/2011 - PSA 6 (Polar Bear) via eBay from Stevens Creek Sports Cards - Thanks, and love your shop by the way. I stopped by multiple times when I was supporting a client in Milpitas in (2003/4?)
