Jocko Conlan
|
(b. December 6, 1899 - d. April 16, 1989)
|
A long-time minor leaguer, Conlan started umpiring by accident. In a 1935 game, when one of the regular umpires was overcome by heat, Conlan was rushed in to pinch-ump. Remembered for his trade-mark polka dot tie, Conlan utilized a sharp tongue to keep order. He umpired in six World Series and six All-Star games. |

Comments: There's only
one card issue for several HOF umpires including Jocko Conlon -
1955 Bowman. I purchased a PSA 6 in December, 2003 from hobby friend
Jay Wolt (Cavalcade of Sports). In March, 2004 I upgraded to a PSA
7 with an eBay win. I upgraded one last time in January, 2005 to
this PSA 8 when another hobby friend Marc Schoenen sold me the card
in a chat room transaction. |

Description: |
Bowman produced its final baseball card set as an
independent card maker in 1955, a popular issue which has color
player photographs placed inside a television set design. The set
consists of 320 cards that measure 2-1/2" X 3-3/4" in size. High-numbered
cards (#s 225-320) appear to have replaced certain low-numbered
cards on the press sheets and are somewhat scarcer. The high series
includes 31 umpire cards. |
