Jimmy Dykes
(b. November 10, 1896 - d. June 15, 1976)
Star 3rd baseman Jimmy Dykes played every position except pitcher and catcher and was always Connie Mack’s favorite player. A mainstay for Philadelphia’s 1929 – 1931 championship teams, Dykes batted over .300 five different seasons and was a slick fielding 3rd baseman.

Comments: Ultra rare and un-cataloged in SCD, a number of the handful of issues in circulation are virtually unique, with NONE recorded on PSA’s illustrious “pop” charts, and only a few copies encapsulated by SGC. With that in mind, presented here is Athletic’s star 3rd baseman Jimmy Dykes in a SGC 10 holder. His representation on this remarkable cardboard scarcity is equally impressive with a stoic portrait pose of the popular A’s star dominating the obverse side. You can almost feel Dyke’s intensity via the splendid contrast and focus emanating from this image. The entire picture is well centered “top to bottom” and slightly centered towards the left edge. The corners are moderately worn with general wear along the upper and lower edges, and no major creases are evident. The reverse side has a blue ink signature (perhaps of a previous owner). While the technical assessment may be somewhat harsh, this offering’s unique standing on all major population reports supersede the grade.

Year(s): 1929
ACC Set Designation:
Set Name: Orient Theatre
Country: United States
Description: In 1915, Philadelphia’s Orient Theatre (on 62th St. and Woodland Ave.) opened its doors for the first time with accommodations for approximately 600 ticket holders. In 1929, to commemorate the Athletic’s dominating ballclub that was running away with the American League championship, the Orient issued various lobby cards of the Athletic players measuring approximately 3-1/4” x 5-1/2”which depicted black & white player portrait photos on the obverse and a listing of the week’s shows and/or films on the reverse - “The Lone Defender” starring Rin-Tin-Tin. Particularly appealing is the pitch for month of October highlighted by the phrase “The Orient’s batting average will be 1000 for October…That Means Hit After Hit”!
